DRIVING STUDENTS TO SCHOOL
We remind parents to use extreme caution when dropping off and picking up
students in front of the school. Parent must NOT enter the bus zone to pick
up or drop off their student. Students should not be dropped off earlier than
8:05 a.m. in the morning and must be picked up within 15 minutes after
students are dismissed from school at the end of the day. Please DO NOT block
traffic in and out of the bus drop off zone. When conversing with friends
pull out of the drive through zone! Parking is available in the lot and
garden areas.
VOLUNTEERS
We welcome help from parent volunteers. If you have a talent or a skill to
share or would like to donate some time helping with one of our many projects,
please let us know on the signature sheet included in this section of the
handbook. All Volunteers or visitors need to check in at the office and get a
pass. The District requires
DANCES
Eligible students enjoy several dances a year with a D. J. sound show and
refreshments. Hours are 6:00 – 8:30 p.m. Students should arrive on time and
must stay for the entire dance unless previous arrangements have been made
PRIOR TO THE DAY OF THE DANCE. A request to leave early or arrive late must
be signed by the parent and principal. Students must be picked up no later
that 8:30 p.m. Those not picked up by that time may be ineligible for the
next dance. Tickets are sold in advance and may not be purchased at the door.
NOTE: Students who are absent from school on the day of a dance will not be
allowed to attend the dance. Permission may also be denied to students with
unsatisfactory citizenship. All school rules apply for all dances, including
the DRESS CODE. See attached calendar for dance dates.

Dances will be scheduled with the neighboring school districts that Salmon
Creek Students can attend.
EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Students who participate in: sports, drama, field trips (including any outdoor
ed/overnight trips), dances and all school-sponsored activities are subject to
the following eligibility requirements:
1. 2.0 GPA the previous report card period.
2. No unsatisfactory citizenship referrals.
3. Recommendations from teachers.
4. No suspensions within the last 30 days of the event.
5. Referrals in the current grading period subject to participation review.
6. School attendance in the current grading period subject to participation
review.
7. Attendance at school on the day of the activity required in order
participating in the activity.
BEHAVIORAL GUIDELINES
Appropriate student behavior is an integral part of a successful school
experience, and is a shared commitment between students, staff and parents.
The following guidelines are based upon the need to provide a safe learning
environment conducive to learning for all students. Seventh and Eighth grade
student’s eligibility to participate in the Yosemite Institute Outdoor
Education Program will be based upon appropriate behavior throughout the
school year. Major and/or repeated violations of school rules will jeopardize
a student’s participation in the trip.
DRESS CODE STANDARDS
The Harmony Union School District staff feels that appropriate school attire
contributes to a positive learning environment. Salmon Creek standards have
been established to create an atmosphere and attitude in which students
perform well, feel comfortable, and do not distract others. We appreciate
cooperation from each family in helping to maintain appropriate standards of
appearance.
As a K-8 campus with many young children our students should not wear
clothing, buttons, jewelry or hats that contain images or wording that is
offensive to others due to its ethnic or sexual nature; may promote alcohol or
drug use; or is disruptive to the educational process. Upon a perceived
infraction students and parents will be counseled regarding the
inappropriateness and impact of the issue on others. A second infraction may
result in disciplinary action.
• Any article of clothing, jewelry, or adornment, which disturbs the
educational process, is prohibited.
• This includes, but is not limited to, items with expression, pictures, or
words which are obscene, profane, pornographic, representative of threatening
or illegal behavior, disparaging or demeaning to others (such as racial,
religious, sexist, or ethnic epithets, or advocating pain, death, suicide, or
use of drugs and alcohol).
• Apparel with bare midriffs, strapless shoulders, halter-tops, or low cut
necklines are not appropriate for school. Half tee shirts, see-through shirts
or blouses are not allowed. Tank Tops are allowed as long as the straps cover
bra straps.
• Pants, shorts and skirts are to be worn at waist level (this applies to all
students).
• General rule for length of dresses and skirts – with student standing and
arms down to their sides, the length of the skirt, shorts or dress must be at
or below the fingertips. General rule length of shorts is a 6-inch inseam.
• Shoes must be worn at all times. Athletic shoes must be worn during
physical education.
• All hats are to be removed during indoor school gatherings (i.e.:
assemblies, dances, concerts). Individual teachers may set their own rules
regarding the wearing of hats in their classroom.
• Inappropriately dressed students will be asked to leave class until a
change of clothing is received from home.
This dress code also applies to the Promotion ceremony, dances and all school
functions.
The Principal shall determine final judgment of appropriateness.
NUISANCE ITEMS
Those items that are deemed a nuisance to the educational process and tend to
disrupt others are to be left at home. Such items, if brought to school, will
be confiscated and returned only to the parent of the student. Repeated
offenses will be viewed as acts of defiance and subject to further
disciplinary action.
Nuisance items include, but are not limited to the following items: permanent
markers; water guns; balloons; cameras (other than for yearbook); rubber
bands; sling shots; electronic games; large sums of money; glass bottles; etc.
The school cannot be responsible for personal items brought to school by
students. Valuable items should definitely be left at home.
Harmony Union School District students may NOT use iPods and cell phones or
other electronic devices during school hours including before and afterschool.
If you need to reach your child during school hours, please call and leave
message with the office.
➢ 1st time confiscated: Student may pick item up from the school office or
teacher.
➢ 2nd time confiscated: Student’s parent may pick up from the school office or
teacher on a Friday.
➢ 3rd time confiscated: Student may pick up for school office or teacher on
the last day of school.
BULLYING & CYBERBULLYING BP 5131.2
Students
The Governing Board recognizes the harmful effects of bullying on student
learning and school attendance and desires to provide safe school environments
that protect students from physical and emotional harm. District employees
shall establish student safety as a high priority and shall not tolerate
bullying of any student.
No student or group of students shall, through physical, written, verbal, or
other means, harass, sexually harass, threaten, intimidate, cyberbully, cause
bodily injury to, or commit hate violence against any other student or school
personnel.

Cyberbullying includes the transmission of harassing communications, direct
threats, or other harmful texts, sounds, or images on the Internet, social
media, or other technologies using a telephone, computer, or any wireless
communication device. Cyberbullying also includes breaking into another
person's electronic account and assuming that person's identity in order to
damage that person's reputation.
Bullying Prevention
To the extent possible, district and school strategies shall focus on
prevention of bullying by establishing clear rules for student conduct and
strategies to establish a positive, collaborative school climate. Students
shall be informed, through student handbooks and other appropriate means, of
district and school rules related to bullying, mechanisms available for
reporting incidents or threats, and the consequences for perpetrators of bullying.

The district may provide students with instruction, in the classroom or other
educational settings, that promotes effective communication and conflict
resolution skills, social skills, character/values education, respect for
cultural and individual differences, self-esteem development, assertiveness

School staff shall receive related professional development, including
information about early warning signs of harassing/intimidating behaviors and
effective prevention and intervention strategies.

Based on an assessment of bullying incidents at school, the
Superintendent/Principal or designee may increase supervision and security in
areas where bullying most often occurs, such as classrooms, playgrounds,
hallways, restrooms, cafeterias.
Intervention
Students are encouraged to notify school staff when they are being bullied or
suspect that another student is being victimized. In addition, the
Superintendent/Principal or designee shall develop means for students to
report threats or incidents confidentially and anonymously.
School staff who witness bullying shall immediately intervene to stop the
incident when it is safe to do so. (Education Code 234.1)
As appropriate, the Superintendent/Principal or designee shall notify the
parents/guardians of victims and perpetrators. He/she also may involve school
counselors, mental health counselors, and/or law enforcement.
Complaints and Investigation
Students may submit to a teacher or administrator a verbal or written
complaint of conduct they consider to be bullying. Complaints of bullying
shall be investigated and resolved in accordance with site-level grievance
procedures specified in AR 5145.7 - Sexual Harassment.
When a student is reported to be engaging in bullying off campus, the
Superintendent/Principal or designee shall investigate and document the
activity and shall identify specific facts or circumstances that explain the
impact or potential impact on school activity, school attendance, or the
targeted student's educational performance.
When the circumstances involve cyberbullying, individuals with information
about the activity shall be encouraged to save and print any electronic or
digital messages sent to them that they feel constitute cyberbullying and to
notify a teacher, the principal, or other employee so that the matter may be
investigated.
If the student is using a social networking site or service that has terms of
use that prohibit posting of harmful material, the Superintendent/Principal or
designee also may file a complaint with the Internet site or service to have
the material removed.
